Oh my! We been busy these past few months...it seems like the time has just flew by. We have been focusing on several things this first half of the year.
3rd-5th Grade:
The third through fifth grade students concentrated on the 5 components of fitness and took a pre-test to evaluate their personal fitness level. We saw that many of us really need to work on our muscular strength and endurance! Simple things we can do at home to help with this are push ups, planks and sit ups. Here's a challenge: Try to do as many as you can during a commercial break when your watching your favorite television programs. You can do them as a family!
We also focused on throwing and catching. We had a variety of experiences with throwing and catching, from softball-style throwing to football and flying disc-style throwing. We tried different activities and games to practice our technique. We evaluated our progress and determined that practicing a skill actually makes us better!!
Currently, we have started working on a dance unit. We have been focusing on line and folk dances. We have been learning the about the countries the dances originated from and some fun facts related to our dances. Ask your kids to show you what they learned...they're quite good!
Kindergarten-2nd Grade:
The kindergarten through second grade students have really been focused on how we move and balance our bodies. We are working really hard to improve our galloping and skipping technique (both are hard for us to learn). We have been working on how to share space with others safely while moving and how to listen for directions (a VERY important skill!)
We also tried out throwing and catching. We concentrated on the underhand throw; both to ourselves and to a partner. We used our throwing skills in a variety of activities and games.
Currently, we are learning how to dance following dance steps and keeping a steady rhythm. We are learning popular dances and folk dances. Learning to keep beat with the music is hard but, when they concentrate, they do very well!

I hope you all have a wonderful winter break and enjoy some time with your families. Please try to make it a goal to get the kids at least 60 minutes everyday while they are out of school...it helps keep them healthy and will let them rest a little better in the evening.
